Open Work Permit

You may qualify for an open work permit if you meet any of the following criteria:

  • You are an international student who has graduated from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) and are eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).
  • You are a destitute student unable to pay your tuition fees.
  • You hold an employer-specific work permit and are experiencing or at risk of abuse related to your employment in Canada.
  • You have applied for permanent residency in Canada.
  • You are a dependent family member of someone who has applied for permanent residence.
  • You are the spouse or common-law partner of a skilled worker or international student.
  • You are the spouse or common-law partner of an applicant under the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program.
  • You are a refugee claimant, a protected person, or a family member of such individuals.
  • You are under an unenforceable removal order.
  • You hold a temporary resident permit.
  • You are a youth participating in specific programs.

Please note that additional criteria must be met for eligibility. If you have an open work permit, you may also qualify for an extension, provided you continue to meet the requirements for working in Canada.

Employer-Specific Work Permits

An employer-specific work permit allows you to work under the conditions outlined in your permit, which may include:

  • The name of the employer you are permitted to work for.
  • The duration of your employment.
  • The specific location where you can work, if applicable.

Spousal Work Permit

You may be eligible for an open work permit if you are:

  • The spouse of a skilled worker in an occupation classified under NOC skill types 0, A, or B, approved to work in Canada for six months or longer.
  • The spouse of an applicant for the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program in a position classified under NOC 0, A, B, or C.
  • The spouse of a foreign student enrolled at a public post-secondary institution, such as a college or university, or CEGEP in Quebec.
  • A family member of a foreign representative or a family member of a foreign military member working in Canada.

General Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for a work permit, you must:

  • Demonstrate to an immigration officer that you will leave Canada when your work permit expires.
  • Provide proof of sufficient funds to support yourself and your family members during your stay in Canada and for your return home.
  • Comply with Canadian laws and have no criminal record.
  • Not pose a danger to Canada’s security.
  • Be in good health and undergo a medical examination if required.
  • Not intend to work for an employer who regularly offers striptease, erotic dance, escort services, or erotic massages.
  • Provide any additional documentation requested by the immigration officer to demonstrate your eligibility to enter Canada.
